Good practice in action: supporting capacity

A second example is the Community Conservation Fund, managed through the Department of Conservation which approved a grant of $13,585 to Tiakina Te Taiao Ltd, for restoration of Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve, Nelson.

Key contract features included:

At the time of application, Tiakina had funding for project management from another funding source. This was subsequently withdrawn, and the project was unable to continue as approved due to limited capacity to manage the scale of the initial project.

The Community Conservation Fund worked with Tiakina to reduce the amount granted and the corresponding outputs (number of plants to be purchased and planted). This enabled Tiakina to succeed with the project on a smaller scale, while still being accountable for the expenditure of public monies.
